Location Recording

All of our recordings are carried out on location rather than in the studio. This is because finding the right acoustic for a particular recording is probably the most important single stage in determining the quality of the final recording.

Our recordings are carried out by
Patrick Allen who, in addition to being an experienced recording engineer and producer, is also a qualified acoustician, and his knowledge of acoustics has often proved invaluable in getting the best sound from difficult venues. For large-scale recordings Patrick is assisted by a team of experienced engineers.

We have experience of recording a wide variety of artists in many different venues throughout the UK from small recital halls such as the Wigmore Hall, and the Purcell Room through to vast spaces such as King's College, Cambridge and Gloucester Cathedral, and we can usually advise a suitable venue to suit the music being recorded.

We record to a variety of digital audio formats including high resolution digital audio and surround sound, and we can maintain the high resolution throughout the subsequent editing and mastering processes, only reducing to release quality at the final
master stage.

This is important as it maintains the highest possible sound quality and also "futureproofs" recordings should they be released in more technologically advanced formats at some stage in the future.

We can also record and edit digital video, which is particularly useful for concert
web-casts or developing multi-media titles.

Whatever the chosen recording format, our technical facilities are of extremely high quality and includes microphones by Sennheiser and Bruel & Kjaer, preamps by Amek, and analogue to digital conversion by Apogee.

For an indication of the sort of projects we get involved with see our past projects page.

For a non-technical guide to making recordings, see our recording guide.
